WHEN YOU HEAR music like this thewild, loose, and woozy drags ofguitar; the impossible beauty of it all-whatkind of landscape presents itself in yourmind? Vistas big enough to be forgotten in.Deserts which stretch back to the begin-ning of time. Infinite horizons melting intopink bokehs. It's Texas, isn't it?Formed in 2017 in Texas' Rio GrandeValley, Glare aren't so much genre tradi-tionalists as they are painters of widerealms and intense moods. The four-pieceband has already accumulated a large au-dience, both in the flesh with their reputa-tion for sell-out shows, and on the internet,a place where people go to short-circuitfeelings through their screens.Sunset Funeral, the band's debut LP, is afog of dreamy grief, where feeling super-sedes language. It's music, as guitarist ToniOrdaz puts it, "for people who don't knowhow to talk about how they feel." An albumthat's been years in the making, Sunset Fu-neral is a document of unspeakable grief,charting the process of mourning and howit travels through our subconscious anddreams.One of the great charms of Sunset Fu-neral, and of Glare overall, is how they ap-proach such a large, celestial sound withhumble materials. Among the shoegaze re-vivalists, Glare come to the canvas with amore resourceful, DiY perspective thanmany of their peers. Glare's music is toosublime, too huge to sound like it camefrom any kind of manmade instrument, tinyamp box or otherwise.On first listen, Sunset Funeral-whichscans as vast as desert sandmay over-whelm the senses. But look closer, andyou'll find a multiplicity of heavily crushedtextures, treasures. "Guts', with its sweetlychugging guitar line, dissolves the bordersbetween bliss and despair. "2 Soon 2 Tell',one of the album's most gauzily romantictracks, is both tense and transcendent. NüBurn, a crunchy and lilting number, harkensback to the band's grittier hardcore roots.But even when they deign to go hard, youcan hear a softening in Glare's sound com-pared to any of their previous releases, aswell as an attempt to lean into more tradi-tional pop song structures. The music driftsheavenward, to be sure, though it's stilltethered down by steady foundations. It'sbeautiful. It's humid. It's delirious. It's mu-sic made by people whose feelings speaklouder than words.This is an ALL-AGES event. This is a delicensed show.
